322[Card Review] The Painters: HERO

An art performance that is more exciting than a concert
It is just an art concert. Why do my shoulders move up and down?
“The Painters: HERO,” a nonverbal performance about the process of making pictures,
is an exciting and cheerful performance.
Due to the skill of the performers who talk familiarly to the audience,
laughter does not cease in the audience.

Are they painters or comedians?
Let me introduce performers who make you doubt your eyes and ears.
The heroes of “The Painters: HERO,” who are painters, dancers and comedians!
They complete pictures while shaking their body to exciting beats.
It seems like a live music video.

Shall we see the first work?
The performer, who performs comic acting like Chaplin,
turns into a charismatic painter when he makes a picture.
As he chips away at the canvas with a knife, like carving,
the first work emerges through the darkness. The indomitable hero, Beethoven!

“The Painters: HERO” which depicts the heroes of the century on a canvas
Now, they dribble paints on a canvas,
and colors the canvas by roughly rubbing it with their palms.
An abstract painting has been put together now.
Ta-da! What figure do you see?
In this way, “The Painters: HERO” is calling up the heroes of the century one by one.

A dust drawing made with shade
While the performers are making pictures, they giggle with the audience
or concentrate while acting to music.
While they do so, a shapeless image is made.
After they pour powder on a canvas with a blackish shade,
the hero of martial arts movies, Bruce Lee, emerges.

Editor’s eye: Fun and romance of drawing
“The Painters: HERO” shows various techniques of art
such as action painting* and dust drawing.
But the time when the audience concentrates the most
is when everyone is immersed in the fun and romance of drawing itself.
Drawing a house, the moon and stars with light and carving cupid on the night sky…
What do you say? Don’t you suddenly feel like drawing?

*Action painting: A style of painting in which paint is dribbled or splashed onto a canvas. It emphasizes the act of painting itself rather than the result of work.

Editor’s eye: Fun and romance of drawing
Now it’s time for marbling, art on water.
Any shape turns into a gorgeous pattern.
A variation of a geometric pattern becomes marine life.
I can’t take my eyes off of the marbling art. This is what a picture is.
Magic that makes an audience feel deeply lost in the world of pictures,
forgetting how time passes!

Who are the last heroes making a grand finale?
Three performers are standing before three canvases.
They look very dignified and solemn like commanders.
They start to draw quickly as if competing.
Who will be the last heroes of “The Painters: HERO” which has been running ceaselessly?

A fantastic world of heroes and pictures
A huge screen turns into the Great Wall of China and cherry blossoms fall from the sky.
Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei,
did they rule over the whole world on horseback like this in those days?
“The Painters: HERO,” which has guided the audience into the world of heroes and pictures
with a lengthy breadth like a movie, comes to an end, leaving a touching impression.

This is an exciting performance that recalls our memories
